PURCHASING YOUR PERFECT PUPPY
You can go just about anywhere to get a "DOG" but purchasing that perfect puppy should be a carefully though out process, you must do your homework. The puppy you purchase will be an investment you make that should encompass about 15 years.
A Breeder can be anyone that puts two dogs together to get puppies. People that just breed dogs for money care nothing about the health, temperament and quality of the breed, their main concern is only the money that they can pocket from you. They cut cost for the care of the mother, feeding her inferior food while she is caring the litter and the litters care is just enough to keep them alive to be able to retain more money. They care nothing about you, your family and certainly not the breed that is the popular demand for the moment. Television commercials that show an animal or a movie with a particular breed causes the public to want one just like it. Puppy Mills, and back yard breeders satisfy this frenzy. The sad part of this is the puppy that you may purchase will more times than not be nothing like the one in the commercial or movie. This has destroyed many breeds. For several years the American Cocker Spaniel had the reputation of a snappy hard to control animal. This is the result of uneducated breeders out to make a quick buck. A true American Cocker is a loving happy merry breed. They love children with a passion, love to please you and truly want to become one of the family, not just a back yard dog.
Breeding dogs is a complex process of years of carefully studied pedigrees not just one person but countless others. In a Five Generation Pedigree it took "62" dogs to make your new baby. If these dogs were put together by uneducated unethical people that cared nothing for the quality, temperament, conformation and health of this breed, the result can be a heart breaking experience for
you and and a miserable life for the dog.
More times than not it results in a painful life with knees and hips that won't stay in place and blindness. But the sadness is a very painful life for the innocent dog. And sometimes unfortunately the only kind thing to do is to put the puppy or adult dog down.
A Reputable Breeder should provide you with information and try to educate you about the breed. ALL breeds of dogs have some health problems. But a Breeder that truly cares about a particular breed is very careful what lines they introduce to their bloodlines.
They should let you meet at least the mother of the puppies. In today's world the mother could have been shipped to the father. Technology has made it possible to even ship the sperm across the country. And even the sire could have been deceased for many years with the technology o frozen stored sperm. So sometimes it may be impossible for you to meet the sire. But you should at least meet the mother. This will give you and idea of what your dog will not only look like but its temperament. And a good breeder will be proud of their dogs and equally proud of the sire that they have chosen, and have a picture of him. I do not recommend purchasing a dog that is not AKC Registered. Other registries are not as strict about purebred dogs and will register anything that closely resembles a breed with just a picture, thus your registered dog may not be what you wanted. You will only find this out after the dog is grown and you may have paid a lot of money for a puppy that is not quite what you thought it would be. Remember all puppies are cute, but will it grow up to look like what you wanted.
So with all this said please slow down and take the time to research this lovely breed and ask the breeder what it's really like to own an "American Cocker Spaniel". They require grooming and exercise. Don't just get a puppy to satisfy the urge to have a puppy to later find out that this may not be the breed for you and your life style and cast away a loving dog.

HIS FIRST TASK WAS TO GET HIS LITTLE LEGS UNDER HIM AND BEGAN TO WRESTLE WITH HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS. LITTLE BY LITTLE, PLAY TIME WITH HIS LITTER MATES AND HIS MOM HELPED HIM LEARN IMPORTANT LESSONS ABOUT HOW TO BEHAVE WITH OTHERS. AS THE "HELP LET GO OF MY EAR OR TAIL" I BEGAN TO PROVIDE LOVING HUMAN CONTACT. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THIS EARLY IMPRINTING SHAPES YOUR PUPPIES PERSONALITY. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT A PUPPY NOT BE SEPARATED FROM HIS LITTER MATES UNTIL NO EARLIER THAN 8 WEEKS THIS HELPS DEVELOP A HEALTH SECURE PERSONALITY.
WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR PUPPY IT NOW IS UP TO YOU TO GIVE HIM THE PROPER CARE HE REQUIRES DAILY. THERE'S A LOT INVOLVED, HIS NUTRITION, PLENTY OF LOVING ATTENTION **GENTLE TRAINING*** SAFE TOYS AND A COMFORTABLE SAFE HOME. AND MOST IMPORTANT PROPER VETERINARY CARE AND GROOMING.

AGE 8 TO 12 WEEKS
AT THIS AGE YOUR PUPPY IS GETTING HIS ACT TOGETHER PHYSICALLY. HE STILL IS NOT VERY COORDINATED FOR PLAYFUL JUMPING AND TURNING AND TUMBLING. ABOUT HIS 12TH WEEK HE WILL START SHEDDING HIS PUPPY TEETH AS HIS PERMANENT TEETH START TO COME IN AND HIS BLADDER CONTROL IS GETTING A LITTLE BETTER. I WILL GIVE YOU SUGGESTIONS LATER ON POTTY TRAINING YOUR NEW BABY.
HIS BEHAVIOR WILL BEGIN TO CHANGE AS HE SHIFTS HIS DEPENDENCE TO YOU AS HIS OWNER AND LEADER. REMEMBER YOU BECOME HIS WHOLE LITTLE WORLD. HE WILL WANT TO BE CLOSE TO YOU CONSTANTLY THIS IS FOR SEVERAL REASONS ONE FOR COMFORT AND THE OTHER FOR LEADERSHIP. SO REMEMBER THIS IS THE TIME TO TEACH YOUR PUPPY WHAT IS EXPECTED OF HIM AS A FAMILY MEMBER.
HE IS CURIOUS ABOUT EVERYTHING!!!!! HE HAS A VERY SHORT ATTENTION SPAN AT THIS AGE AND IS VERY VERY EASILY DISTRACTED.
HE BASICALLY HAS HAD NO FEAR IN HIS EARLIER WEEKS OF AGE BUT YOU MAY NOW NOTICE THAT BETWEEN 8 TO 12 WEEKS HE MAY SUDDENLY BECOME CAUTIOUS OF ANYTHING NEW IN HIS SURROUNDINGS. THIS FEAR PERIOD IS NORMAL. HE MAY BE FEARFUL OF ABRUPT MOVEMENTS OR LOUD SOUNDS. PLEASE PLEASE DON'T PLAY SCARE THE PUPPY TO WATCH HIM JUMP. YOU WILL TOTALLY DESTROY YOUR PUPPIES TRUST IN YOU AND BREAK HIS CONFIDENCE. THEN YOU WILL HAVE BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS THAT ARE SO VERY HARD TO CORRECT.
JUST LIKE A LITTLE BABY THAT EXPLORES WITH HANDS AND FINGERS. YOUNG PUPPIES LIKE TO INVESTIGATE THINGS USING HIS MOUTH. COMBINED WITH THE INCREASING URGE TO CHEW AS PERMANENT TEETH START TO COME IN, AND YOU HAVE ONE MOUTHY CUSTOMER! SO REMEMBER IF IT IS ON THE FLOOR (HIS TERRITORY) IT IS FAIR GAME. SO PUPPY PROOF YOUR HOME, AND PROVIDE HIM WITH LOTS OF SAFE, CHEW-ABLE TOYS.
JUST LIKE AN INFANT YOUNG PUPPIES NEED TO SLEEP OFTEN SO KEEP PLAY TIME SHORT AND GIVE HIM LOTS OF SLEEPY TIME FOR PROPER GROWTH. DON'T FORCE HIM TO STAY AWAKE AND PLEASE RESIST THE URGE TO SHOW YOUR PUPPY OFF FOR THE FIRST FEW WEEKS GIVING HIM TIME TO ADJUST TO HIS NEW LIFE. REMEMBER IT IS VERY FRIGHTFUL FOR HIM TO LEAVE THE COMFORT OF HIS MOM, LITTER MATES, AND ME. WE ARE ALL THAT HE KNOWS AND WE WERE THE ONES THAT KEPT HIM SAFE AND LOVED. KEEP IN MIND THAT HE WILL PROBABLY BE AFRAID OF YOU SO HOLD HIM CLOSE AND TALK SOFTLY TO HIM ON HIS WAY HOME WITH YOU. DOING THIS NOW WILL SHAPE YOUR BOND WITH HIM.
YOUR NEW LITTLE BABIES IMMUNE SYSTEM IS NOT FULLY DEVELOPED UNTIL HE IS ABOUT 12 WEEKS OF AGE. TO HELP PROTECT HIM FROM SEVERAL SERIOUS SOMETIME DEADLY DISEASES, IT IS CRUCIAL DURING THIS TIME TO KEEP UP WITH HIS VACCINE SCHEDULE (PUPPY SHOTS) JUST AS IMPORTANT AS GIVING YOUR PUPPIES SHOTS ON SCHEDULE
**KEEP**
YOUR PUPPY AWAY FROM OTHER DOGS. DO NOT TAKE THE PUPPY TO PUBLIC PARKS, REST AREA'S PET SHOPS OR ANY AREA WHERE OTHER DOGS MAY HAVE SOILED THE GROUND.
**WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO THE VET**
DON'T LET OTHERS IN THE WAITING AREA TOUCH YOUR PUPPY THIS CAN BECOME QUITE A CHORE BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES A PUPPY, JUST BE KIND TO THE STRANGER AND SAY HE HASN'T HAD ALL HIS SHOTS YET. DON'T LET HIM GO POTTY OUTSIDE THE VETS OFFICE, DON'T PUT HIM ON THE SOFA OR THE FLOOR (HOLD YOUR PUPPY) OR TAKE HIM TO THE VET IN A SMALL PET TAXI COVERED WITH A TOWEL. WHEN YOU ENTER THE EXAM ROOM INSIST THAT THE VET OR HIS ASSISTANT CLEAN THE TABLE IN FRONT OF YOU WITH A DISINFECTANT. ** REMEMBER THE PET THAT JUST LEFT THE TABLE OR CAME INTO THE OFFICE COULD HAVE BEEN VERY ILL WITH **PARVO **

TRAINING THE YOUNG PUPPY
THE YOUNG PUPPY HAS A VERY SHORT ATTENTION SPAN, BUT YOU CAN GENTLY BEGIN HIS BASIC TRAINING AT THIS TIME. WEARING A COLLAR, FOLLOWING ON A LEASH, AND COMING TO HIS NEW NAME WHEN CALLED.
THE VERY FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS PICK OUT YOUR NEW BABIES NAME. EVERY TIME YOU INTERACT WITH HIM USE HIS NEW NAME, WHEN HE RESPONDS TO HIS NAME GIVE HIM A TREAT.
THE SECOND THING TO DO IS INTRODUCE HIM TO HIS COLLAR. THIS WILL BE VERY BOTHERSOME TO HIM SO START WITH. HE WILL PROBABLY SCRATCH AT IT AT FIRST AND I HAVE EVEN HAD PUPPIES LAY DOWN THINKING THEY CAN'T EVEN WALK WITH IT ON. JUST TRY TO TAKE HIS MIND OFF OF THE NEW COLLAR WITH GENTLE PLAY TIMES. THEN INTRODUCE HIM TO A VERY LIGHT WEIGHT LEASH. LET HIM DRAG IT AROUND BEHIND HIM FOR A WHILE AND WHEN YOU BELIEVE HE HAS GOTTEN ACCUSTOM TO THE LEASH START PUTTING A LITTLE RESTRAINT ON THE PUPPY USING THE LEASH AS HE TRIES TO WALK AWAY. NEVER PLAY TUG-A-WAR WITH THE LEASH. YOU WANT HIM TO ENJOY WEARING HIS NEW COLLAR AND LEASH. SO THE IMPORTANT THING IS NEVER MAKE HIM AFRAID OF IT.
AFTER YOU AND YOUR BABY ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THE LEASH AND COLLAR START TEACHING HIM TO COME TO HIS NAME WHEN CALLED. SAY HIS NAME FIRST (JOE COME) IF HE DOESN'T COME TO YOU THEN GIVE A GENTLE PULL AND REPEAT THE COMMAND. AND OF COURSE WHEN HE DOES COME TO YOU GIVE HIM A TREAT.
KEEP THESE EARLY TRAINING SESSIONS VERY SHORT ABOUT 3 TO 4 MINUTES AT A TIME. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO MAKE TRAINING TIME FUN FOR HIM AND USING LOTS OF LOVE, PATIENCE AND LOTS OF HIS FAVORITE TREAT.
AT THIS TIME YOUR PUPPIES IMMUNITY ISN'T ESTABLISHED, YOUR PUPPY CAN'T GO TO PUPPY TRAINING SCHOOL OR OUT IN PUBLIC. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR PUPPY INTERACT WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE AT THIS TIME. TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM HAVE YOUR FRIENDS COME TO YOUR HOME AND VISIT AND INTERACT WITH HIM. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARE SURE THAT YOUR FRIENDS PETS ARE CURRENT ON THE VACCINATIONS BEFORE THEY EVER ENTER YOUR HOME. SEVERAL DISEASES CAN BE CARRIED INTO YOUR HOME ON PEOPLES CLOTHES AND SHOES, SO CHECK BEFORE THEY EVERY COME TO YOUR HOME. AND OF COURSE WHEN IN DOUBT DON'T LET THEM VISIT.
THERE ARE A LOT OF FUN TRAINING TIMES AHEAD FOR YOU AND YOUR NEW PUPPY. TAKE THE TIME TO ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL TIME WITH YOUR BABY. THE FEW MINUTES YOU SPEND DAILY WITH THE YOUNG PUPPY WILL BUILD A WONDERFUL LIFE WITH YOUR NEW DOG.
I AM ALWAYS HERE TO HELP WITH TRAINING ISSUES WITH YOUR NEW BABY. PLEASE FEEL TOTALLY FREE TO GIVE ME A CALL IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH HIS TRAINING.

POTTY TRAINING
I HOPE THE FOLLOWING WILL GUIDE YOU IN HOUSE TRAINING YOUR NEW PUPPY. NO TWO PUPPIES ARE ALIKE EACH WILL PRESENT ITS OWN SET OF SIGNALS TO ALERT YOU THEY NEED TO GO POTTY. ALL MY DOGS GO POTTY ON COMMAND. I TEACH THEM THIS FOR SEVERAL REASONS. FIRST NO ONE WANTS TO STAND THERE FOR AND HOUR WAITING FOR HIM TO FIND JUST THE RIGHT SPOT. AND WHEN TRAVELING THERE MIGHT NOT BE THE RIGHT SPOT. AT DOG SHOWS THEY MIGHT HAVE TO GO ON PAPERS IN A BUILDING, AND TO THE WAY THEY THINK MOM TAUGHT ME NOT TO GO INSIDE SO, I'M NOT SUPPOSE TO GO IN HERE BUT IF THEY HEAR ME SAY GO POTTY IT MUST BE OK. IF YOU FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULES AND SUGGESTIONS HOUSE TRAINING IS REALLY NOT THAT HARD. AND EVERYONE IS CAPABLE OF HOUSE-TRAINING A PUPPY WITH JUST A LITTLE EFFORT ON YOUR PART. I HAVE STARTED THE GROUND RULES FOR HOUSE TRAINING YOUR BABY. I HAVE DONE MY BEST TO KEEP THE PUPPIES IN CLEAN SURROUNDINGS. THIS FIRST SIMPLE RULE HAS TAUGHT THE PUPPY TO BE CLEAN, AS IT GROW UP IT WILL WANT TO STAY CLEAN SO THEREFORE NOT DIRTY IT'S HOME, (DEN).
SIGNALS THAT YOUR PUPPY NEEDS TO GO POTTY:
1- CIRCLING
2- SNIFFING THE FLOOR.
3- CRYING
YOUNG PUPPY'S WILL NEED TO IMMEDIATELY RELIEVE THEMSELVES AFTER A NAP, VIGOROUS PLAY AND EATING. ALWAYS PICK THE PUPPY UP AND CARRY HIM OUTSIDE. IF YOU LET HIM WALK TO THE DOOR BEFORE HE GETS THERE HE WILL RELIEVE HIMSELF. AT FIRST TAKE THE PUPPY OUT EVERY 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR. TAKE HIM TO THE SAME PLACE EVERY TIME AND SAY GO POTTY. YOU WILL BE SURPRISED TO FIND THAT THE PUPPY WILL WANT TO GO POTTY TO PLEASE YOU ESPECIALLY IF YOU GIVE LOTS OF PRAISE AND A TREAT. GIVE A PIECE OF CHEESE OR A PIECE OF HOT-DOG OR LUNCH MEAT. JUST ONE PIECE AND THIS IS THE ONLY TIME HE RECEIVES THIS KIND OF FOOD. THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL IF ONLY GIVEN AT THIS TIME. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU CRATE TRAIN YOUR PUPPY FOR SEVERAL REASONS. ONE THIS WILL BECOME HIS HOME HIS BEDROOM, HIS SAFE HAVEN. HE CERTAINLY WILL NOT WANT TO SOIL HIS BED. I HAVE ALREADY INTRODUCED THE PUPPY TO A CRATE, SO HE IS ALREADY COMFORTABLE WITH IT. SHOW YOUR NEW PUPPY HIS CRATE. THE CRATE SHOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE HIM WHEN HE BECOMES AND ADULT. HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO STAND AND TURN AROUND AND STRETCH OUT WHILE SLEEPING. I RECOMMEND THE HEAVY WIRE CRATES WITH A GRATE IN THE BOTTOM,AND PAN. USING THIS TYPE OF CRATE WILL HELP KEEP THE PUPPY CLEAN IF HE WERE TO GO POTTY IN THE CRATE. OR IF YOU PREFER THE PLASTIC TRAVEL CRATES, THAT WILL DO JUST FINE. ADD SHREDDED NEWSPAPER FOR A BED IN THE PLASTIC CRATE AND A TOWEL IN THE WIRE CRATE. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER USE THE CRATE AS PUNISHMENT AND DON'T MAKE THE CRATE A JAIL FOR THE PUPPY. THE CRATE IS ONLY A TOOL AND THE PUPPY SHOULD NEVER LIVE IN IT FOR THE REST OF IT'S LIFE. ADD CHEW TOYS TO THE CRATE, LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN SO HE CAN INVESTIGATE THE CRATE ON HIS OWN. DON'T RUSH HIM TO GO INSIDE. REMEMBER, YOU AND THE WAY YOU DO THINGS ARE ALL NEW TO HIM, AND HE IS ALREADY IN A STRANGE PLACE ALL ALONE WITH YOU AWAY FROM EVERYTHING FAMILIAR AND SAFE TO HIM. IT IS OK TO PUT HIS FOOD AND WATER IN HIS CRATE BUT AFTER HE EATS TAKE HIM OUT. IF YOU CHOOSE TO NOT USE A CRATE, CHOOSE A SMALL ROOM SUCH AS A SMALL LAUNDRY ROOM OR BATH ROOM. REMEMBER TO MAKE THE ROOM SAFE. NO EXPOSED WIRES THAT THE PUPPY CAN CHEW AND HURT HIMSELF, REMOVE ALL CHEMICALS THAT THE PUPPY COULD GET INTO, EVEN IF THEY ARE IN A CABINET. YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED THAT THEY CAN OPEN IT AND GO ON A TREASURE HUNT. PUT HIS BED, FOOD , WATER AND TOYS AS FAR AWAY FROM THE DOOR AS POSSIBLE AND PLACE NEWSPAPERS OR PUPPY PADS ON THE FLOOR AWAY FROM HIS BED AND FOOD. HE SHOULD GO AS FAR AWAY FROM HIS BED AND FOOD AS HE CAN GET. WHEN YOU TAKE THE PUPPY OUT OF HIS ROOM OR CRATE, PICK HIM UP AND CARRY HIM OUTSIDE TO THE SAME PLACE EVERY TIME AND TELL HIM TO GO POTTY . SHOWER HIM WITH PRAISE AND OFFER A TREAT AFTER HE RELIEVES HIMSELF OUTDOORS. AS YOUR NEW PUPPY RESIST THE URGE TO RELIEVE HIMSELF IN HIS DEN HE MAY, CRY, BARK, AND SCRATCH THE DOOR. TAKE HIM OUTSIDE IMMEDIATELY AND PRAISE HIM ON THE WAY TO LET HIM NO THAT HE DID GOOD TELLING YOU HE NEEDED TO GO OUT . EVEN IF HE DOES NOT SHOW ANY SIGNS, TAKE HIM OUTSIDE EVERY HOUR. DO NOT LET THE PUPPY HAVE THE RUN OF THE HOUSE. THIS WILL NOT REINFORCE THE EARLY TRAINING TO KEEP HIS HOUSE CLEAN. HE WILL HAVE TO MUCH ROOM TO GET AWAY FROM HIS DEN. WHEN HE IS OUT OF HIS ROOM OR CRATE KEEP A CLOSE WATCH OVER HIM. IF YOU DISCOVER AN ACCIDENT AFTER THE FACT, DO NOT SCOLD THE PUPPY. INSTEAD, TAKE HIM TO THE ESTABLISHED OUTDOOR SPOT AND PRAISE HIM IF HE GOES. SCOLDING AT THIS TIME WILL MAKE YOUR PUPPY NERVOUS AND CONFUSE HIM. HITTING THE PUPPY AND RUBBING HIS NOSE IN IT WILL MAKE HIM GO HIDE TO GO POTTY. IF HE IS HAVING TROUBLE FIGURING OUT WHAT YOU WANT HIM TO DO IN HIS ESTABLISHED PLACE TAKE BOWEL MOVEMENT, OR TAKE A CLOTH AND WIPE UP THE URINE AND TAKE OUTSIDE AND PLACE IT IN HIS SPOT AND SHOW IT TO HIM AND SAY GO POTTY, WHEN HE SNIFFS THE URINE OR BOWEL MOVEMENT . DOGS ARE CREATURES OF HABIT AND OUR ROLE IS TO GET HIM TO THINK OF YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE AS HIS DEN. THIS PROCESS MAY TAKE UP TO SIX WEEKS OR LONGER. JUST WHEN YOU ARE READY TO GIVE UP YOUR PUPPY WILL CATCH ON.. OTHER INFLUENCES: FEEDING SCHEDULES MOST PUPPIES NEED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM WITHIN AN HOUR OR LESS AFTER EATING AND PLAYING (AND DON'T FORGET WAKING FROM A NAP). BY SCHEDULING YOUR PUPPY'S MEALTIMES, YOU CAN CONTROL WHEN HE NEEDS TO RELIEVE HIMSELF. FEED AT CONSISTENT TIMES, TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY DEPENDING ON HIS AGE. LET THE PUPPY EAT HIS FILL AND THEN TAKE HIM OUTSIDE SAYING THE WORDS GO POTTY. PRAISE HIM WHEN HE GOES AND DON'T FORGET TO GIVE THAT SPECIAL TREAT. REMAIN PATIENT. WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT, THE HORSETRADING CONCEPT WILL INDEED 'CLICK' WITH YOUR DOG. REMEMBER THE TIME YOU INVEST NOW WILL HAVE GREAT REWARDS IN A HAPPY UNION OF YOU AND YOUR PUPPY. EXISTING ODORS: IF HE URINATES INDOORS FOR NO APPARENT REASON, OR JUST SEEMS TO BE DRAWN TO A CERTAIN AREA. URINE OR FECAL ODORS MAY BE PRESENT AND DRAWING HIM TO AN AREA. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A RENTER AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF THERE WERE ANIMALS THERE BEFORE YOU. USE A SPECIAL ODOR NEUTRALIZER TO REMOVE ANY SCENTS THAT MIGHT ATTRACT YOUR NEW PUPPY TO A PREVIOUSLY SOILED AREA. FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURE'S DIRECTIONS. ALSO I FIND THAT IF YOU MIX LEMON AMMONIA WITH WATER AND PUT IN A SPRAY BOTTLE AND SPRAY OVER THE CLEANED UP URINE SPOT, THIS WILL HELP DISCOURAGE HIM FROM RETURNING TO THE SAME SPOT. DOGS INSTINCTIVELY WANT TO COVER UP OLD SMELLS WITH THEIR OWN. IF YOUR PUPPY IS AT FAULT, AND NOT A PREVIOUS PET, ALLOW HIM IN THE SOLID ROOM ONLY WHEN HE IS SUPERVISED. TRY STEAM CLEANING THIS ROOM WITH A COMMERCIAL ODOR NEUTRALIZER.
NERVOUS URINATION:
IF YOUR NEW PUPPY URINATES WHEN HE GREETS YOU, OR WHEN HE MEETS SOMEONE NEW HE MAY HAVE SUBMISSIVE URINATION. TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, SHOW TENDER LOVING CARE. IF YOU SCOLD OR GET UPSET AND LOUD YOU ONLY REINFORCE THE REASON HE IS SUBMISSIVE. DOGS THAT HAVE THIS PROBLEM ARE VERY SENSITIVE, SO SCOLDING WORSENS THE PROBLEM. BE PATIENT. MOST PUPPIES OUTGROW THE PROBLEM. SOCIALIZE THE PUPPY, REMAIN CALM AND QUITE AND AVOID EXTENDING YOUR ARM TO YOUR PUPPIES HEAD TO GREET HIM. AS A DISTRACTION, CALMLY ASK HIM TO SIT AND OFFER A TREAT. BEING FRIGHTENED CAN ALSO CAUSE THIS BEHAVIOR. TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHY THE PUPPY MIGHT BE FRIGHTENED. ALWAYS TELL YOURSELF THIS IS MY FAULT NOT HIS. LOUD AGGRESSIVE VOICES AND HARSH TREATMENT WILL OFTEN DESTROY THE PUPPIES CONFIDENCE. ALWAYS TALK SOFTLY TO A FRIGHTENED PUPPY. CALL TO HIM BEFORE YOU EVER GET TO HIM, LETTING HIM KNOW YOU ARE COMING, GIVING THE PUPPY TIME TO GET READY TO SEE YOU. NEVER, NEVER HIT A PUPPY. YOU WILL RUIN THE SPIRIT OF THE DOG. ALSO REMEMBER YOU ARE DEALING WITH A YOUNG DOG. YOU CAN NOT EXPECT A TWO MONTH OLD CHILD TO STOP WETTING ITS DIAPER. TIME AND PATIENCE WILL CURE ALL. I AM HERE TO HELP YOU IN ANY WAY I CAN. AND EACH PUPPY CAN COME UP WITH ITS OWN SET OF CHALLENGES. MAKE POTTY TIME FUN FOR HIM SO HE WILL LOOK FORWARD TO GOING OUTSIDE AND GETTING THAT SPECIAL TREAT. REMEMBER POTTY TIME IS POTTY TIME SO NEVER MAKE IT PLAY TIME UNTIL AFTER HE DOES WHAT YOU REALLY TOOK HIM OUTSIDE FOR.
CRATE TRAINING
THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WITH A NEW PUPPY AND ITS NEW OWNERS ARE HOUSEBREAKING ISSUES AND PUPPIES CHEWING ON ITEMS THAT ARE UNDESIRABLE.
THESE ARE THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES THAT ARE THE NEW OWNERS RESPONSIBILITY IN MAKING A PERFECT FAMILY MEMBER.
BUT THEY ARE THE EASIEST PROBLEMS TO SOLVE WHEN THE PUPPY IS CORRECTLY CRATE TRAINED AND HOUSEBREAKING CAN BE FUN AND EASILY ACCOMPLISHED IF YOU FOLLOW SIMPLE RULES.
USING A CRATE IS NOT CRUEL.
IT SIMULATES A DEN, SAFE HAVEN AND HIS OWN SPECIAL SPACE. YOUR PUPPY HAS ALREADY BEEN PRE-CRATE TRAINED BY ME TO HELP IN THE TRANSITION INTO HIS NEW HOME AND ASSIST YOU IN HOUSEBREAKING YOUR NEW PUPPY.
A DOG WILL NOT SOIL WHERE HE SLEEPS. THIS BEHAVIOR GOES BACK TO THE DOGS INSTINCTS WHEN HE WAS A PREDATOR IN THE WILD.
FIRST IF THEY ELIMINATED IN THEIR DEN OTHER PREDATORS WOULD SEEK THEM OUT FOLLOWING THE SCENT AND PREY ON THEIR YOUNG.
USING THIS NATURAL INSTINCT REALLY MAKES HOUSE TRAINING EASY.
SO WITH THIS THOUGHT IN MIND THE TRICK IS TO PROVIDE A SMALL ENOUGH AREA SO THE PUPPY WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH ROOM TO POTTY IN HIS BEDROOM.
YOUR CRATE SHOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH FOR THE ADULT DOG TO LAY DOWN COMFORTABLY. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THE WIRE CRATES WITH A WIRE GRATE IN THE BOTTOM, AND A PAN. JUST IN CASE THE YOUNG PUPPY DOES GO POTTY WHEN YOU ARE AWAY OR DURING THE NIGHT.
REMEMBER THE PUPPY HAS BEEN KEPT CLEAN ALL ITS LIFE USING THIS METHOD.
IF HE WERE TO HAVE BEEN KEPT IN DIRTY CONDITIONS IN THE LITTER BOX, OR ALLOWED TO BE ON DIRT OR CONCRETE RUNS AS A YOUNG PUPPY IT IS VERY HARD TO HOUSEBREAK HIM. IF KEPT DIRTY WHILE GROWING UP THEN HE DOESN'T CARE IF HE LIVES IN A SOILED BED.
***** CRATES SHOULD NEVER BE USED TO PUNISH******
THE PUPPY HAS TO LOOK AT HIS CRATE AS HIS SPECIAL PLACE JUST FOR HIM TO RELAX IN NOT A JAIL!!!!!!
THIS CRATE SHOULD ONLY BE USED WHEN YOU ARE TOO BUSY TO KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PUPPY AND REST TIME. THE REST OF THE TIME HE SHOULD BE IN YOUR COMPANY, BEING CUDDLED, PLAYED WITH AND SOCIALIZED IN HIS NEW HOME WITH YOU. THIS TEACH'S THE PUPPY MANY THINGS.
THAT HE IS LOVED AND SAFE IN HIS NEW HOME.
KEEP THESE THINGS IN YOUR MIND CONSTANTLY THAT PUPPIES
***MUST***
RELIEVE THEMSELVES
***BEFORE***
AND WITHIN 15 MINUTES
**AFTER***
EATING, IMMEDIATELY UPON DRINKING, AFTER PLAYTIME AND
***WAKING FROM A NAP***.
****NEVER, NEVER***
PUT YOUR PUPPY OUTSIDE BY HIMSELF.
THIS WILL NEVER WORK IN THE HOUSEBREAKING PROCESS. PICK UP YOUR PUPPY AND CARRY HIM OUTSIDE TO THE SAME PLACE
***EVERY TIME****
WHEN YOU SIT YOUR PUPPY DOWN, SAY
***GO POTTY***
LET YOUR PUPPY WALK AROUND AND AS SOON AS HE RELIEVES HIMSELF OUTSIDE
***** PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE AND GIVE A TREAT*****
ONLY BRING YOUR PUPPY BACK INSIDE WHEN YOU ARE TOTALLY SURE HE IS FINISHED. IF YOU DON'T YOU ARE ASKING FOR AN ACCIDENT AND THE PUPPY WILL ONLY BE HAPPY TO OBLIGE.
EVERY TIME YOU PLACE YOUR PUPPY BACK INTO HIS CRATE PRAISE AND GIVE A TREAT.
NEVER TAKE THE PUPPY OUT OF HIS CRATE WHEN IT IS WHINING, CRYING OR BARKING.
CORRECT THE PUPPY BY TELLING HIM NO BARK IN A STERN VOICE, DON'T YELL.
WHEN HE IS QUITE THEN TAKE HIM OUT TELLING HIM GOOD PUPPY . IF YOU LET YOUR PUPPY OUT WHEN HE IS MAKING NOISE THEN YOU ONLY TEACH HIM TO YELL AND YOU WILL LET HIM OUT TO PLAY AND GET ATTENTION.
YOU ARE SENDING HIM A MIXED MESSAGE AND WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT TO CORRECT ESPECIALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WHEN YOU WANT TO SLEEP AND THE PUPPY REALLY REALLY WANTS TO PLAY.
ONLY LET YOUR PUPPY OUT WHEN HE IS QUITE AND NEVER AFTER HE IS PUT DOWN FOR THE NIGHT.
THE FIRST COUPLE OF NIGHTS THE PUPPY MAY CRY VERY LOUDLY BECAUSE HE MISSES HIS MOM AND LITTER MATES. DO NOT LET YOUR PUPPY SLEEP IN YOUR BED UNTIL HE IS TOTALLY HOUSEBROKEN. IF YOU START THIS PRACTICE NOW YOU COULD POSSIBLY MISTAKENLY TRAIN THE PUPPY HE CAN NEVER BE LEFT ALONE AND YOU WILL REALLY HAVE A MESS WHEN HE DOES HAVE TO BE ALONE.
SOMETIMES THIS MAKES A DOG VERY DESTRUCTIVE, TEARING UP EVERYTHING IN SIGHT BECAUSE HE IS FRIGHTENED TO BE ALONE.
I RECOMMEND EITHER PLACING THE PUPPY AND HIS CRATE IN YOUR BEDROOM SO HE CAN SEE YOU AND YOU CAN COMFORT HIM . OR YOU CAN PUT THE PUPPY IN THE KITCHEN OR SPARE BATHROOM WITH THE LIGHT ON, A RADIO WITH SOFT MUSIC AND A SOFT STUFFED ANIMAL (MAKE SURE IF YOU PLACE A STUFFED ANIMAL IN HIS CRATE THAT THERE ARE NOT SMALL PIECES THAT THE PUPPY CAN CHEW OFF AND CHOKE).
WHEN PREPARING PUPPY FOR BEING CRATED FOR THE NIGHT MAKE SURE THAT THE PUPPY HAS EATEN AT LEAST 2 TO 4 HOURS SO HE WILL HAVE TIME TO DIGEST HIS FOOD AND WATER. PLAY WITH YOUR PUPPY AND WEAR HIM OUT BEFORE BEDTIME, AND TAKE HIM OUT AND MAKE SURE THAT HAS TOTALLY EMPTIED HIMSELF BEFORE BEDTIME.
TAKE HIM OUT AS LATE AS POSSIBLE FOR HIS LAST NIGHT OUTING. PLACE HIM IN HIS CRATE PRAISE HIM GIVE A TREAT AND TELL HIM GOOD NIGHT.
DON'T GO BACK UNTIL ABOUT 4 OR 5 AM PUPPY BLADDERS AND BOWELS ARE JUST NOT MATURE ENOUGH TO HOLD IT ALL NIGHT.
KEEP THIS POTTY TIME SHORT AND SWEET DON'T MAKE IT PLAY TIME.
DON'T LET HIM THINK THIS IS FOR FUN THIS IS TOTALLY BUSINESS AND PUT HIM BACK IN HIS CRATE AND LEAVE HIM ALONE. IF YOU MAKE IT PLAY TIME THEN AT 5 AM HE WILL WAKE YOU UP JUST FOR PLAY. THIS EARLY MORNING POTTY TIME IS JUST LIKE HAVING AN INFANT SO ITS JUST A FACT OF LIFE WITH A NEW PUPPY. AT ABOUT 4 TO 5 MONTHS OLD THIS SHOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD IT BETTER AS HIS BLADDER AND BOWELS ARE GETTING LARGER. ONCE HE LEARNS THE ROUTINE AND IT SHOULD TAKE ABOUT 2 TO 4 NIGHTS HE WILL LOOK ON THE CRATE AS HIS SAFE HAVEN AND BEDROOM. YOU COULD SEE HIM GOING TO HIS CRATE FOR NAP TIME ON HIS OWN.
***** REMEMBER HIS CRATE IS NOT A PRISON ********
PUPPY BITING
Puppies’ mouths are filled with about 28 teeny-tiny razors that seem to be attracted to your fingers or toes. Dog trainers call it “play biting,” but it’s irksome and often painful when your cuddly pup seems to be all teeth.
However, this is completely normal for teething and necessary for development, you can train away with a few simple steps.
Teach your puppy bite inhibition
.Learning how to moderate the force of a bite is very important for all dogs. There may come a time when they’re in pain or fearful, and they put their mouth on you or someone else. But if they’ve learned bite inhibition, they understand that they shouldn’t bite down hard. Puppies naturally nip at each other while playing. If they bite too hard on their mother or litter mates, the other dog will likely make a loud yelp sound, warning the puppy, “Hey, that hurt!”
Depending on the dog, you can teach this, as well, by making a high-pitched “ow!” sound if they bite you. Beware though, because, for some puppies, this actually gets them even more worked up and likely to bite. In this case, it is better to turn quietly around, walk away, or gently put the pup into their crate for a few minutes to calm down. If they do back off, be sure to reward your dog with a treat and some verbal praise.
Teach your puppy that biting means “game over.
If your puppy bites you while playing, that means playtime is over, with no exceptions. Yelling at or physically punishing your puppy, as strange as it sounds, is also a type of reward. It teaches them that biting gets some kind of response from you, which is known as negative reinforcement. Distract the puppy with the words NO BITE and completely stop all playing. Pick up puppy and face the puppy away from you sit it down and give your puppy an alternative item to chew.
It’s a good idea to keep a puppy chew toy at hand at all times, so you can anticipate biting behavior and substitute the toy for your hand or furniture. Doing so will let pups know what is OK to bite or chew. If they start nibbling at your fingers or toes while you’re playing, offer a toy instead.
Again, if they continue to nip, stop the play session immediately. If you’ve been training your puppy to sit, you might also redirect them by asking them to sit and rewarding with a toy.
Prevent the pounce. If your puppy is pouncing on your legs or feet as you walk, a common playful puppy behavior, try holding a high-value treat next to your leg as you walk, to help the puppy learn to walk nicely alongside you. This same tactic is used when teaching a puppy to walk on a leash.
Put them in a time-out.Gently put your puppy in their crate to give them a chance to calm down and prevent them from biting. It’s very important to make sure that they don’t learn to associate the crate with punishment, so be calm. Once the pup calms down, you can let them out.
Offer quiet time or a potty break.Sometimes a biting puppy is really an over-tired puppy, and they need to be put in a quiet space or crate to take a nap. Other times, they may need a potty break, or may just be hungry or thirsty.
Help use up some energy. When the puppy keeps biting, even after you substitute a toy several times, he may just need to burn up some physical or mental energy. Take them in the yard and watch them run around.
Reinforce behaviors you desire. We sometimes forget that when our puppy is calm and quiet, we should reinforce that with a “good dog” or a piece of kibble or a pat. You’ll help them learn what behaviors you’re looking for through positive reinforcement.
Never, ever hit or otherwise physically punish your dog.
Enrolling in a puppy class, is a great way to train your baby and teach
you and your how to communicate.
Teaching your little manic play biter to be polite with their mouth may seem like a huge challenge at first. Patience and consistency are the keys. Some puppies may back off during one play session, and come at you teeth first in the next.
“Play biting does not mean your puppy is vicious, you need to distract this behavior.
Also remember just call I should be able to help change this behavior if it comes up.
